Volvo 2024: the price of Swedish premium from urban crossovers to luxury sedans

Volvo is synonymous with safety and reliability, and no wonder - the Swedish manufacturer has worked for a good reputation since the launch of its first model.

The Volvo brand was born out of an idea stemming from a conversation in a restaurant between two engineers working at bearing manufacturer SKF - Assar Gabrielson and Gustav Larson - who decided to create a car that every Swede could be proud of. And so Volvo was born. The name is no coincidence, as the word means ‘I roll’ in Latin.

Officially, Volvo was founded on 14 April 1927, or rather on the day when the first historic Volvo, called OV4, rolled off the assembly line of the factory located on the island of Hisingen. By the 1950s, the Swedish company employed 6,000 people. At the same time, the first commercial vehicle with seat belts left the factory, a decision that revolutionised the automotive market.

In the 1990s, Volvo Car Corporation was bought out by the American concern Ford. However, due to the crisis in the American car market, the new owner was the Chinese manufacturer Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Company Limited. As a result, the Asian company sold its shares to the Geely conglomerate in 2010. The current owner of Volvo continues the idea started by the two founders, who emphasised assembly quality and the highest technical level in their developments.

What cars are in Volvo's portfolio today? The passenger car models are true to tradition - they are roomy sedans and functional station wagons. Currently, the smallest car in the line-up is the S60, representing the D segment. Previously, the company produced C-segment models - S40 and C30, but their successors have not yet followed. The role of the flagship limousine is played by the Volvo S90. Both it and the younger sedan are offered in a functional body ‘station wagon’ (such models are designated by the manufacturer with the letter V). Interestingly, both models are also available in the Cross Country version, which is characterised by increased ground clearance and all-wheel drive (for the V90 Cross Country model, buyers can order air suspension to raise the car even more).

Every major manufacturer should have at least a few SUVs in its lineup, and Volvo is no exception to this rule. Passenger cars with off-road inspired bodywork, providing relative freedom of movement off the tarmac, form an important part of the Swedish manufacturer's range.

Volvo pays attention not only to safety, but also to the environment. This is reflected in the downsizing of the engines. This means a reduction in engine displacement while retaining the power and torque characteristics of more powerful engines.
