Citroen: from origins to the present day - analysing model costs

Citroen is not just a car brand, but a whole history of innovation, bold design solutions and comfort. Founded in 1919 by André Citroen, the company has left a colourful mark on the automotive industry for more than a century.

André Citroën, an engineer and entrepreneur, founded the company, which quickly gained popularity thanks to bold ideas and innovations. The first Citroën models were characterised by original design and technical innovations.

In 1920, the Citroen Type A became the first mass-produced car in Europe, initiating mass production and gaining popularity thanks to its affordable price and reliability. In the 1930s, Citroen entered new markets and expanded its range, offering both affordable cars and luxury models such as the Traction Avant with its revolutionary front-wheel drive layout. But then the Great Depression and World War II become serious tests for the company.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Citroen revived after the war, producing iconic models such as the 2CV and DS, which became design icons and symbols of the French car industry. For the next ten years, the brand expanded beyond France, absorbing other car companies and entering new markets. But the oil crisis of the 1970s and unsuccessful model decisions lead to financial difficulties. In the 1980s, Citroen becomes part of the PSA Peugeot Citroën group. The company introduces new models (AX and BX) to help regain lost ground.

From the 1990s to the 2000s, the company focuses on developing practical and affordable family cars, such as the Xsara and C4. From 2010 to today, Citroën has been actively developing its electric vehicle business, introducing models such as the C-Zero and ë-C4. The French company positions its own cars as comfortable and stylish, emphasising design and innovation.

The cost of Citroen cars varies widely, reflecting the diversity of the brand's model range. The average price of a new Citroen in Europe starts at €15,000 for compact city models and can reach €50,000 or more for premium versions and large SUVs.

The cost is influenced by several factors, which we will talk about further:

  • The popularity of the model. Cars that are in high demand (such as the C4 Cactus or C5 Aircross) tend to cost more.
  • Year of manufacture. New cars are always more expensive than used cars. The older the vehicle, the lower its value, all other things being equal.
  • Engine. Powerful and economical engines (diesel, hybrid, electric), as a rule, increase the cost of the car.
  • Mileage. The lower the mileage of a used car, the higher its value.
  • Condition. The absence of accidents, good maintenance, originality of parts have a positive effect on the price.
  • Region. Prices for the same cars can vary greatly in different countries and cities.
  • Body colour. Popular shades, as a rule, do not affect the price, but rare or exclusive ones can increase it.

The most affordable car in the Citroen range is the C1, with prices starting at around €13,000 in basic configuration. Despite its entry-level status, the Citroen C1 offers the comfort and economy typical of the brand.

The price of the Citroen C1 can vary depending on the following factors:

  • Engine: economical petrol versions are available
  • Transmission: manual or robotic
  • Equipment: from basic to top-of-the-range.
  • Body colour: standard colours are cheaper than metallic or pearlescent.
  • Wheel discs: steel or alloy wheels, ranging in size from 14 to 15 inches.
  • Interior: type of seat upholstery, air conditioning available
  • Technology: basic or advanced multimedia system, rear view camera.

Even in its basic configuration, the Citroen C1 includes a number of important features such as electric power steering, ABS, ESP and front airbags.

Citroën's most expensive production car to date is the Citroen C5 X in top-end hybrid configuration, which can cost up to €55,000. This flagship car is a combination of a sedan, station wagon and crossover, embodying the best technology and comfort of the brand.

Factors influencing the high price of the Citroen C5 X:

  • Innovative platform: a combination of sedan comfort and crossover practicality
  • Hybrid powertrain: economy and power
  • Advanced technology: adaptive suspension, Level 2 driver assistance systems
  • Luxurious interior: high-quality materials, spacious cabin
  • Design: unique styling that combines elegance and functionality
  • Personalisation: a wide range of customisation options.

It is worth noting that even among the more ‘conventional’ Citroen models, such as the C5 Aircross or Grand C4 SpaceTourer, the cost of the top versions with the maximum range of options can easily exceed 40,000 euros. Electric models such as the e-C4 are also in the upper price range, emphasising the brand's technological leadership and its focus on sustainability.
